MIDSTATE SPEEDWAY
MORRIS, NY
MIKE NEWELL PHOTOS
These photo's have been submitted by Morris, NY resident and longtime
Midstate Speedway fan Mike Newell. Most were taken by track photographers
Don Phoenix and Rex Chase of New Berlin, NY. They represent the 1964 to
1965 era as the club transitioned from flatheads and 6 cylinders to OHV
V8's.  Many a 5 Mile Point competitor traveled north to the fairgrounds to
take on the locals at this time. Thanks to Mike for sharing them.
Mike's uncle Donnie Newell in 1964, before the V8 was fitted. Don is a lot of fun and can often be found telling jokes at our events.
Bob Cable Jr. was a fixture at the speedway, this car was also campaigned by Ray Bunzey.
Sidney, NY's Johnny Allen with the Waldron's sponsorship. Johnny also campaigned the former Wimble Daytona Studebaker at Midstate.
Bill Walters from Walton, NY.
Must have been a one shot deal for Joe Donahue, displaying the checkers wasn't uncommon for the gritty Southern Tier driver though.
Les Goodrich.
Clyde Hewitt in a sharp 1937 Ford slantback.
Ray Bunzy had the misfortune of remodeling Joe Norton's 3X in what looks like a hard hit.
Undaunted, Ray was back with this car that he also ran at Penn Can.
By '65 the Norton/Bunzy team was campaigning this car.
After the last Flathead blew, Willy Wust inserted a 327, which he hated. For '65 the team had a '37 Ford with a 289. Moose Cary cops a heat.
Willie Wightman with a 283 in the engine bay.
Joe Donahue with the Kennerup 41 in 1965.
Bob Jones in 1965.
Johnson City's Glenn Knapp, this bug ran @ 5MP and sported a rare Fish carburetor.
Jimmy Mott with the 'Pink Pig' sponsored coupe.

Ray Decker in rare Friday night shot under the lights.
An earlier Ray Decker racer.
And on the track.
In an open event a latemod (Fred Barce) chases a modified into turn three of the narrow track. Thanks to Dave Conde for identifying the #18.
Latemodels head down the backstretch.
A view from the stands.
And another as they line up..
And one more of 'Jerry' in the former Bill Roese latemodel.

Chuck Akulis smiles at Mitch Gibbs.
Mike sent along these photos taken this
summer, as he related "I wonder how many
feature wins and track campionships between
these three fellows. My dads 75th birthday
party." - the answer -  'alot'.
Mitch, Carl Nagel and Chuck.
Check out this early 1950's crowd at Morris..
