MIDSTATE SPEEDWAY
MORRIS, NY
READERS SUBMITTED PHOTOS
12/27/08 Here's a e-mail from Richard Parry:
Ok after a lot of talk and phone calls. I think i got the low down on this one. The 11 car
was owned by a fellow from Utica, NY by the name of Richard "Dick" Schymski whom
was involed with a juck yard on Barns Ave A1 Auto Parts. Robert "PoP" Wisnoski was
the driver and it was a B-Class car. Marty Ackley said he drove the car the last race of
the season 60-61??? and finished 3rd in the feature at Mid-State. He clamed Bob had
already won the championship with it and had something going that week-end thats
how he came to drive it. He also relates now how Bob won so many featuers that year
because it was wicked fast and handled like a dream.
As a kid growing up in Bridgewater i can rember the car being at the Ace Garage today
Rudy put his thinking cap on and came up with it being there for a motor change being
the engine from the orginal white 20 of bob's Valley Boys car which by the way was a
Montgomery Ward rebuild flathead which was fine tuned a little more???Lot more are
you catching my drift? Anyway after that season the car just dissapeared and no one
really knows the story behind it. I have heard a couple of storys one involving the LAW
but can't really verifie it. But i not going to give up on that as there are a couple of
people who might know. To our knowalege this is the only known picture of the car and
thanks to Marty was saved. Maybe someday that era of pictures might surface and be a
track photo shot of it.
Update 10/4/09
Member John Mason sent along these photos, taken in May of 1972 by Richard
Foster, of the Ace Carpet Service #42 driven by Don Pierce of Sidney, as well as
John and Dyke Poole of Gilbertsville. The car was equipped with a Chevy big
block and competed at Midstate in 1972 according to my programs. Thanks John
for passing them along.
Update 12/6/09
Today I was talking with my father who is currently working on re-creation of a
former Midstate Speedway car; last week we had our fall meeting and with all of
this recent activity, I once again felt nostalgic about not only our club, but also
Midstate Speedway. No bittersweet memories for me (check "Nostalgia" in your
Websters...) only good ones. These were provided by member David Conde -
thanks Dave.

Additions 4/8/07
These photos were forwarded by Dean Wilcox and  depict the 'Pop' Wilcox
#32 modified through the years. Based in New Berlin, NY the car raced at
Fonda, Lebanon Valley and Victoria, making occasional trips to Midstate. I
remember riding my bike down to 5 Corners just to get a peek at it, it was
our local hot rod and a good one too.
Circa 1965, the car looked fast sitting still.

Loaded up and ready to go..
This is during the Jim Luke era, Pop's first driver.

Big win and a nice trophy at Victoria.
A classic modified.

Here's some more from Richard Parry and Dave Conde who are
always digging up new stuff. Thanks guys.

Fred Nichols @ 5MP. Fred Smith Photo.
10/29/07 #427 is Burlington Flat's Fred Nichols. This photo is the
1st time out for the car. You can see the damage on the 1/4 panel
from where the car flipped over (trailer and all), a mile from his
house when I was hauling it home for him from the scale in
Edmeston. The car weighed 1,000 lbs. more than he thought and
then the truck got whipping on the way home and I lost control and
the hitch broke and the rest was history. 4 guys (Fred was one) in
the cab of my '51 Ford pickup didn't help matters either. He cut the
car up after a couple tries as it wouldn't handle. Not a great day for
Fred! Dave Conde
10/29/07 Jeff, I was thinking about that Falcon of Fred's today as I
was paving route 12, north of Utica. I think he blew the engine in
the garage, revving the piss out of it. It was a 427 that he bought
from Holman and Moody. He then installed a 390. (Rudy did the
same thing one Friday before Morris in the #4)  I was one of the
regulars at his shop. Do you know Fred? When you interview Rick
and I,we'll have to touch on Nichol's Garage. It was similar to
Willie's but with a whole different crowd. I wish you could have
been my side kick and got to live some of these historic
adventures. You ought to be a mouse when the Wust boys and I get
telling stories. John Clark witnessed one of these bull sessions one
rainy day and darn near pissed his pants. Dave Conde
11/4/07 Many thanks to Dave for the interesting info, I've seen the
Wust boys in action and can verify that they are extremely
entertaining to talk with, the best.

Jeff here are some I forgot I had. These came out of the Mike
Janicki collection when he drove the 27t car for Dick Talbot from
Lenordsville, NY. This would have been 1950 in the old
Consolidated Racing Association days. The day time picture was
taken at Morris and the cars are 27t Mike Janicki, X5 Chuck
Muission, E77 Sharky Shaul. The night time pictures were taken
at Brookfield. Rick Parry
