Sherrill Car
Show
Craig Henry hosted his annual
car show and open house at
his NASCAR and racing
memorabilia shop this past
Saturday in Sherrill, NY.
Excellent weather as well as
an excellent turnout of cars
greeted fans looking to get a
peek of both old and new
technology. Richard parry and
his wife Sharon, John and
Barb Clark, Alan and
Roxanne Weaver, John
Button, and John McCullough
were all on hand to represent
our club with a nice array of
asphalt and dirt modifieds,
sprint cars and a late model
from days gone past. Mixed in
were hot rods, rat rods,
supers, latemodels and
midgets from the current
racing scene, a veritable
smorgasbord for racing nuts.
Richard Parry passed along
these photos and dialog;
'The car show was a huge
success @ Craig Henry's. The
car count was good. Ray
Hedger brought two Oswego
cars, John Clark had the 10
and 3x, John McCullough the
41, John Button a midget and
quarter midget, Sharon had
the 37, Bobby Newman
brought 77 late model Hedger
Built car, Richies 61 - can't
remember the owner, the 22
sprint car, and Paul Kinneys
#19 Sportsman. There was
plenty of give aways and a
50/50, coffee and doughnuts,
hot dogs and soda all day long.
Former drivers were Frank
Mathalia, Bernie Miller, Chip
Lanz, (Wild) Bill Henry to
name the ones I can
remember. There was old
movies playing all day as well
as a ton of pictures of days
gone by. Adam DuChene has
his Grandfathers Mel Phillips
old #14 Utica Rome sportsman
under construction and will be
coming on board with Mid-
State Antique Stock Car Club -
welcome aboard.
POOOOR Sharon learned the
hard way how to unload a race
car. It was hung up on the
edge of the trailer (in nuetral)
as we cranked up the nose it
started to roll and she dove
over the wire on the gate into
the car landing on the floor
between the seat and roll bar
holding onto the hand brake
stopping it going down hill
backwards toward Paul
Kinneys #19 Sportsman on
display. She is bruised up and
black and blue all over even in
places we wouldn't discuss but
ok. Well I think I got it all. A
big thanks goes out to all who
showed up and to Craig Henry
for his hospitality. - Rick'
Apparently Sharon knows
where the brake is, I'll bet
Paul Kinney appreciates that,
hope you are feeling OK
Sharon. I can recall more than
once running after a car and
grabbing the shift lever, or
anything you can get your
hand one to try and stop it,
always a bit of an excitable
time... On Saturday Dad
traveled to Brookfield for the
Wheel Days event and
displayed the P-13 for fans in
the area. He related that was a
good show as well and even
found a Stromberg 81 carb for
$25, it always amazes me what
he can find. Here in the
Southern Tier is was a quite
weekend, relaxing to be
truthful. Had a really nice chat
with Alan and Richard Tatich
on Saturday evening as they
brought over a edelbrock head
Alan had repaired for me,
looks better than new and
ready to bolt back on - now if
we can just keep that timing
down a bit Dad it'll be OK - eh?
Lastly - received a press
release (below) from Jim
Chase this week - The
Spooktacular is on at Afton -
good news as we'll all get to
stretch our legs once more
this season. Hopefully the
weather will stay like this and
it'll be a great show - see you
there.
For immediate release –
Thursday Sept 27
Afton Speedway to host 2007
Spooktacular Saturday,
October 20th
Afton, NY – Afton Speedway
will host one racing event this
season with the October 20th
running of the 2007
Spooktacular. On the card will
be a Demolition Derby plus
Pure Stocks, Junkyard Dogs
(Road Warriors), Junkyard
Pups (Road Bandits), and the
always popular Mid-State
Vintage Stock Car Club.
“The good news,” said Race
Report host Ron Hills, “is that
Afton Speedway will have a
race this year. The GREAT
news,” he added, “is that Wally
Smith and Pat Jordan are
willing to come out of
“retirement” to make this
event a success.”
There is a good chance that
Sportsmen will be added to
the Spooktacular schedule,
and Sue Goodwin and Ron
Hills are both busily searching
for sponsorship money to
make that addition possible.
Addressing the demolition
derby, Pat Jordan stated,” It
will be the same rules as in
the past, and will pay $500 to
win… if we get 40 or more
cars it will pay $1000 to win.
For the racing events, we’ll use
local track rules.” Additional
information about the
Spooktacular will be posted
online soon at http:
//www/theracereport.us.
“It’s important to the future of
the speedway that Afton host a
race in 2007, and it’s also
important to continue the
racing history that Jim
Randall rekindled at Afton in
the early 1990’s,” Hills noted.
“So many people have already
volunteered to help make the
day a success, and more help
is still needed.”
The schedule is for the pits to
open at 9:00 AM, practice at
10:00, heats at 11:00, and
the day’s racing and demo
derby should be completed by
5:00 PM.
For information about the
demolition derby and race
rules, contact Pat Jordan at

sponsorship info or to help out
on race day please contact Sue

Update 10/7/07
Brookfield Wheel
Days, 9/29 &
9/30/07.
Beautiful weather greeted car
owners and fans alike at the
Brookfield Wheel Days this
weekend past, and both
showed up in droves. My
father related that it was one
of the best car counts in
recent history, with over 400
cars entered, and not a lot of
room to squeeze them all in.
He parked the P-13 where he
could, and it happened to be
in the Corvette section which
apparently didn't impress the
neighbors, at first at least.
After making rounds of the
event he came back to the car
to find the Corvette owners
had a new appreciation of the
old stocker, one related "I
could have sold this thing 10
times while you were gone",
and was amazed at that
interest it drew. There were
many former racers on hand,
including: Peter Hughes of
Chadwick's NY, Robert Watson
who drove '53 Ford at
Brookfield, Vaughn Edwards,
who ran at the Leesville, Ny
track with Harvey Brundridge
as owner of their '37 Ford,
Jimmy Angel, Carl Carpenter,
Ray Cross, Carl Camenga, Bud
Hinman and Richard Kirk of
Lee Center. Norm Schmidt was
also on hand, he's the fellow
that donated the #197 to Mike
Newell and John Mason to
display with the club, one of
our most popular cars. All in
all, a great day and great event
that was enjoyed by all in
attendance.
A little more on Afton, this is
being billed as an 'open' event
for all vintage and antique
clubs, as it always has been.
We'll sort it out when we get
there, the Northeast Vintage
Stock Car Club, Midstate
Vintage Stock Car club and
Midstate Antique Stock Car
Club have all been invited for
one more run to finish out the
season, should be fun. See
you there.
One last note: Our Fall
meeting will be held next
weekend on Saturday the 13th
@ 10:00 Am at Jim and Kay
Chase's residence in Cortland,
NY. Many things to discuss as
we set plans for 2008. See you
at Afton.
