Richie Evans Night at
Utica-Rome Speedway.
The
following report was logged by
our Show Class Chairman
Richard Parry - Thanks
Richard!
Wednesday Night Aug 13 was
the make up night for the
RICHIE EVANS
REMEMBERED night saluting
the EVANS #61 with the 61 lap
Dirt Modified event. Also the
20 lap Pro-Stock event in his
memory.
Utica-Rome is where Richie
cut his teeth in the sport that
would give the past champion
33 wins and 4 track titles at
the famed oval.
The evening started out with
rain in the air but cleared off
for the evening show. As we
walked through the gate all
you could see was a sea of
Orange tee shirts in
remberance. Art Newman had
the pinto on display and was
as sharp as ever. Old pal John
Grady was on hand with his
large photo collection for sale.
'Don't tell Sharon how much I
spent'. She got her usual hug
from John. Center court was a
large group swapping stories
and it was past national
champion Bill Wimble, Bruce
Dostel and a host of others.
Bruce said Da Champ is failing
fast as he is down to around
109 pounds now. The Evans
family was on hand and
honered in the remberance as
the number 61 is offically
retired and a permanate flag
was raised in the infield in
Richie's honor. As I looked
around I could see many who
knew him and even raced with
him wipeing a tear from their
eyes on this fitting occasion.
And yes I even shed a couple
thinking what he had
accomplished and where he
might have wound up if he was
still with us.
As the warm up started there
was 40 modified and 21
pro-stocks getting ready to
rumbel. Five mod heats and
two consies decided the field.
Two pro-stock heats decided
the line up there. The 61 lap
$6,161.61 event went to 'The
Frankin Flyer' Billy Decker
with a new track record of
18.508 97.255 mph. The 20
lap pro-stock event went to
Edmeston's Bret Belden.
As a member of the MidState
Antique Stock Car Club I
applaud track owner Gene
Cole and general manager
Barb Clark for a night that
many will remember for some
time to come.
