Otsego County Fair. With the
brake lines to my 'old' truck
(actually it's the newer of the
two...) replaced it was off to
Morris and the Otsego County
Fair. Up 88 the cool air from
the air conditioner made the
fix worth the effort, onto Rte. 8
@ Sidney and then a right
hand turn at Mt. Upton to get
me on Route 51 to Morris. This
is the ultimate motrocycle
road, windy with rolling hills
and great scenery as you roll
through the pretty town of
Gilbertsville. OK, on to Morris,
where I promptly park on the
Mayors lawn.... Was looking
forward to seeing Mike Newell
but he had a board meeting to
attend so we missed. John
Mason was all smiles as I
found my way to the club
display and filled me in. I'm
sorry to report that Mike
recently lost his dog, I know
how that feels, and I want to
offer condolences to him and
his family. John Clark has
brought 'Old Nellie' to the
festivities and they both report
that former Midstater Willie
Wightman is on hand to drive
the P-13, cool! John really
owrks at this display every
year and this year it includes;
John Clark's 3x, the Donahue
Tc9, Jim Chase's #66, the
P-13, the Mouseville Monster,
Don Beagell's #29 and the
Lobdell 111 is inside hanging
out with the cows half coverd
in hay, looks right at home..
Pete Stafford is going to warm
the seat in the Monster, John
Clark will man his 3x and
John Mason has the Tc9 ready
to go for the parade. I meet the
Witghman's and they're fired
up, Scott Wilson and I chat a
bit, miss racing against him,
we had some fun. John Pegg is
on hand too, reminiscing. A
quick bite of sausage and it's
parade time, seems like it
takes forever for the cars to get
around and when they do, the
P-13 has quit. Damn! I'm
hoping it hasn't gotten too hot.
If it make's Willie feel any
better.. the same thing
happened to me once at the
Youth Days parade in New
Berlin. I drove my Lazzaro
replica down to the TownsEdge
ice cream joint where we
congregated and when it came
time to go - nothing. Tim
Mayne had the Tc9 at the time
and pushed me the whole
length of Main Street - an
embarrasing situation. It
wasn't the only time Tim
pushed me around...  The
culprit was a dead battery. The
crowd didn't care though and
gave a big cheer as the Stock
Cars came down in front of the
packed grandstand tonight, a
nice display that included
track champions from both the
flathead and overhead era.
Afterward I'm talking with Carl
Carpenter about our club
exploits here, and how lucky
we were... A fun night as
always. I check over at the
display and John Mason
relates that the P-13 just ran
out of gas... I'm going to have
to get after the mechanic... I
finally find that elusive candy
apple and it's off for Endicott
again, the cool air has
replaced the condtioning and I
replay the night in my mind,
as I have done many a time
after coming out of Midstate,
another one for the archives.
