MEL'S ROAD TRIP 10/29/06
The nice 65 degree sunny Indian
Summer day that we all hoped for
didn't happen, instead Mother Nature
greeted us on Oct. 28th with rain, wind
and cool temperatures. Thus our final
show of the season at the Afton
Spooktacular didn't come off. Maybe if
we were ducks and had mudboggers,
we'd have gotten the show in. Quack
Quack. Even the geese were getting out
of NY and heading south. Regardless if
the show wasn't able to come off, we
want to thank Promoter Pat Jordan for
his efforts and also for calling the show
early as it saved many of us a fruitless
trip on a day that racing was not going
to be possible. The promoter's job is a
difficult one at best in dealing with
racers, leases, track conditions and the
weather. We'd like to let Pat know we
appreciate his efforts, he made the right
call.
And with that, our 2006 season has
come to a close. A successful season on
all counts, many good shows and races
as well. No smashed up cars, no fights
or disagreements and a good time
expressed from all members. That's a
good season in my book and we look
forward to many more in the future.
Our next club function is out Fall
Meeting in two weeks, we have much to
discuss as we look forward to next
season and more than a few new ideas,
should be an interesting meeting.
With the close of racing season, the
start of project season begins. One
project we're taking on this year will be
the cataloging of some photo collections
to ensure their preservation. It's best to
have these in more than one place in
case of fire, floods or other acts of
nature that can destroy them. Our first
road trip was made last week as Mike
Monnat and I traveled up to Franklin,
NY to visit with Mel Ogden and look
over his stuff. It's quite a collection to
say the least - take a look at the
pictures which Mel has been collecting
for years. He started with one picture at
a garage sale and an idea dawned on
him. His mother had once been seeing
a driver that raced at Glen Aubrey
Speedway and although he didn't know
the drivers name, he thought he might
find a picture of his mother with the
car. Thus began his odyssey with
picture collecting and it continues to
this day. His albums will be on display
on this site as soon as we can get them
scanned, here's few to whet your
appetite.
Next up are the flea markets which are
almost always a good source of vintage
parts. Lebanon Valley is next week and
I always look forward to this event,
bring some longjohns and leave
yourself plenty of time as it's always a
large showing. OK, back to the scanner.
