Little York Car Show & Flea Market
9/16/06
Little York Lineup.
“Nikki, have you seen my truck keys?” Not
a good sign for the start of the day. I
should call this ‘Misadventures with my
truck’ although that would be a long story.
Long story short, after some well placed
choice words, the keys magically appeared
and the truck ran just fine, not a
guarantee this weekend past. At least the
151 runs good, and we’re off in the fog up
Route 81 to Homer. Turn off onto Route
281 north and headed to Little York, the
sun has burned off the fog by now and it’s
turned into a beautiful day. Beautiful
setting too as the Cortland Antique Auto
Club members direct us through Little
York Park to our display area. Pull up and
it’s like flies on..well, you know. For the
next hour or so our jaws flap incessantly
as we describe our cars to the interested
car buffs. Always learn something new at
the car shows and new leads abound. Bill
Dudley’s brother Pete has found us and
hangs around for quite some time then
directs us to his car, and nicely presented
unrestored 1940 Ford coupe that survived
Pearl Harbor. Jim Chase pulls up with his
sweet old Ford hauler with two more cars
in tow, he already has the Bill Salamacha
88 and Larry Nye 150 in place when we
arrive and now adds his 2K and his uncle
Lee Chase’s nice Plymouth coupe #66 to
the mix. Jon Button has his Hillegas
sprinter on hand and has talked a friend
into trying it on for size. The ‘Ole Bones’
Dave Kneisal 711 sedan is also on display,
now street driven I can remember it’s last
night with the club vividly. Carl Carpenter
was driving it at Brookfield when he got
turned sideways – right in front of myself
and Timmy Mayne who was really
charging. I missed the car by inches but
Timmy and Carl weren’t so lucky. Car
looks great now, still don’t know how you
can see over that hood though. Mike
Newell’s Pink Panther graces the field
while Mike tries his luck in the Vendor
area. Apparently he had to beat them off
with a broom just to get unloaded. Dad
has brought the Tommy Wilson P-13 while
Nikki and I have trailered up the Stockwell
151 to represent the flathead contingent.
Nice display of all original race cars and
they generate much interest amongst the
car kooks.
Finally break free to get after some parts.
Slim pickin’s, as far as Flathead race parts
go – oh well, keep looking. Dad finds some
nice victor head gaskets and I score a
carburetor for the Willies - $5. Can’t be
any worse than the one on there now,
watch out snow! Banish the thought today
though, the sun is shining and it’s easy to
work up a sweat. Skyline promoter Frank
Payne and his wife Audrey are taking in
the show and we chat about the season
past and next year as well. We’ll be in
touch. Richard and Sharon Perry, Dave
Conde, and Terry Fergerson have also
made the event so we have many familiar
faces to converse with. The cars are just
fantastic, nothing like a nicely restored
antique car, so much style and elegance.
There is a lot of good Modified Stock Car
material on hand here – just say that once
within earshot of one of the owners and
see what kind of reaction you get! Not a
popular thought. Great show, great
setting, nice relaxing day and boy do the
heads snap around when you fire up a full
race flathead. Back in the wind, my sorta
faithful truck has us back to the smiling
Saints just in time for the afternoon jaunt.
They're doing Saint Vitas Dance and
singin' 'Mammy" when we arrive, talented
fellows ready to hide 'presents' amongst
the walnuts. Everyday should be so
perfect, sure beats a day at work. And now
I’m going to let the pictures do the
talking…enjoy.
Wax on, Wax off. Jim Chase works up a sweat.
Jjon Button looks on while his pilot smiles.
Nice car, now get the torches...
Drop in a Flathead V8 and these Model A's will come to life..
Love those Halibrands.
Muscle cars abound..
A great display of original race cars.
Jim Chase smiles with his '34 Plymouth.

~ Golden Anniversary ~
Member Larry and Barb Witter were married
on Sept. 2, 1956 and just celebrated their
50th anniversary. When asked what the secret
was, Larry responded "it's like building an
engine, lots of patience.." That's funny
because when I asked Barb the same question,
she related, "Well, it's like building an
engine...."  Congratulations to you both and
many returns.
