Lancaster 6/9/07 & Utica-Rome 6/24/07
Obviously, there's a bit of
catching up to do with our
event reports as the club has
enjoyed several dates since
our last report. First up was a
date at Lancaster Speedway
near Buffalo, NY which held
their 'Heroes Homing' event on
June 9th to rave reviews. Club
members Richard & Sharon
Parry made the event and
couldn't say enough good
about it, Richard relates:
Jeff sorry I'm late with this but
a lot's been going on.
First off the Reid's hospitality
was out of this world. A great
day with plenty of drivers of
the past and a good display of
cars. We got some track time
as Sharon didn't go out but
did offer Reed the ride as he
laughed and said NO THANKS.
She won a nice gift certificate
in the 50/50 and we went out
for dinner while we were
there. If any history buff
missed this one plan on next
year.

Lancaster Aug 10,11 and 12th
Sat will be the world's largest
collection of
Willys,Angleas,Austins and
drag racing ever assembled
coming across the US and
Canada. Three days of
Rails,Funny
Cars,Gassers,Blown Outlaws
and Muscle Cars don't miss
this one as it will be a once in
a life time to see all this at one
time.

#91 Ron Lux
#71 Dave Marcus
#101 Doug Ryder
# 39 & 9 a couple of Midgets
#7 Art clark
#39 Hudson Hornet

Art was telling me that in 1966
he had 16 wins in this car at
three different tracks with a
FORD inline 6 cyl. In all he
claims around 400 career wins
most of them in his late-model
days. He said those were the
days if i couldn't win it was
Stroker McGurk and we would
put on some shows.

                           Rick

We'd like to thank Jim Reid
and all at Lancaster for
inviting us, maybe next year
more of us will be able to make
the trip.

Next up was the Oneonta Car
show held on Father's day.
Member Mike Newell made the
trip with his # 197 and from
what I hear was the hit of the
show. Tough luck award again
goes to Mel Ogden who hasn't
had any luck in making either
Norwich or Oneonta due to
hauler troubles. Hope to see
you both at 5 Mile this week.

This past Sunday night was
our annual trip to Gene Coles
Utica-Rome Speedway which is
fast becoming one of the crown
jewels in Central New York.
Track operator, my good friend
Mr. Sweet always has us up for
NYSCCA night and my father
was gushing about the place,
clean facility, clean restrooms,
good food, great hospitality
and some of the best racing
he's seen in years. As he's
describing it to me over the
phone this AM I'm gettin'
green. He had plenty of
company with club members
John McCullough, John &
Barb Clark, Alan & Roxanne
Weaver, Richard & Sharon
Parry,  & John Mason all on
hand. Jim and Kay Chase
were there as well promoting
the upcoming CNY HOF
Induction ceremony and ever
steady Jon Button was there
with his sprinter as well. Dad
related chewing the fat with
Bob Gibbs, Stan Barker, Fred
Willems (Fred drove the #43
after Moose Cary had the #88
at Wust's), Don Newell, Joe
Patchen and Carl Carpenter.
My father isn't one to mince
words and he was bubbling
about the track surface and
the show the modifieds put on
relating "Pat Ward led until
the final lap, I figured he had
it but Stewart Friessen got
under him and made it stick.
Billy Decker came the farthest
from 16th and if he had a few
more laps would've got them
both. Jeremy Vunk put on a
great show too in the
sportsman, it was just great
racing all night, big crowd and
one of the nicest facilities I've
ever seen. The whole staff
treated us great, was good to
see Gene, Gloria and Dicky,
they all came by to say hello
and make sure we were taken
care of." The pictures tell the
rest.

Lastly - Ian Riordan has sent
along some nice photo's of
what's going on down under.
Australian's are just as wild
about vintage racing as we are
here and you have to check
out the workmanship of their
cars, just amazing. Ian relates:

Jeff,
I finally got some photos of
Pete and Graham's open
wheeler. These and the shots
of the 36 coupe were taken at
an historic meet in may at
Winton motor raceway Victoria
Australia about an hour s/w of
here.
The 36 is an ex 50s era dirt
tracker from Perth WA. It was
recently restored in
Melbourne Victoria and now
races hard at historic road
course events around Vic, 258
incher, topshift and all.
The 'Maysdale' open wheeler is
another thing
entirely. It was built by a close
friend and his father over the
last 5 years in a fruit packing
shed on their hobby farm. It
was built in the style of pre
war 'specials' built all over
Australia in the 30s to take
on the (few) rich kids in their
Talbots, Bugattis etc. Most
were built in a barn and used
Ford or Hudson running gear
as they gave the best 'bang for
buck' even then. The
aluminium body and 3x2 steel
chassis  were made by Graham
Grenness and the 304 inch
flattie, 4spd single rail and
40 rear (now open driveline)
were put together by his son
Pete. It uses 48 brakes, split
wishbones,a Holden steering
box and Jaguar gauges.
Like most of these specials it
was named after the place
where it was built
-Maysdale.

Thanks again Jeff for your
input, it now runs cool and we
can start
chasing power.
Ian Riordan.

To finish up tonight - jsut a
reminder, our first racing
event is this coming Saturday
night at the historic Five Mile
Point Speedway in Kirkwood,
NY for the Heath Memorial.
Promises to be a good show,
hope to see you there.
This Hudson has torn up some track in it's day.
Red Ryder 101 is sharp.
Ron Lux's engine compartment, Hilborns are always exotic.
Sprinters always look cool.
Art Clark with his super.
Behind the grandstand.
Gene Cole and Fred Willem smile.

HOF Flyer

this event report - make your
plans now to attend the CNY
HOF Induction ceremony at
the former MIdstate Speedway
this coming September 8th, it
promises once again to be a
great time for all who enjoy
these old stock cars from the
past. Our club will be out in
full force and teh formere
drivers are a joy to talk with,
plenty of good food and good
company as well, not to be
missed.
