Club Updates,
February 2007
As winter has descended on the Southern Tier, we have
some club updates to pass along, hopefully this will
put some warm thoughts in people's minds as we look
forward to the 2007 season.
The schedule is complete, and meets all of our
aspirations. We're pleased to announce that we will be
racing again this season at such historic venues as 5
Mile Point, Penn-Can, Utica Rome, Afton and Thunder
Mountain. Racing events include the Heath Memorial,
'The Legends of Penn-Can'/Pappy Bevins Memorial,
NYSSCA and the New Yorker 200, as well as the
Spooktacular and a date with the NY Modified Midgets
respectively. We'll also have displays at Norwich,
Midstate Speedway in Morris, NY, Little York,
Brookfield, and at Craig Henry's NASCAR shop in
Sherrill, NY, (as well as at each racing event).
First things first though, in less than 3 weeks the
winter shows start with a date at the Southern Tier
Speedworld show, held in the Oakdale Mall, Johnson
City, NY. Promoter's Robin Oltz and Paul Szmal always
organize a great show which takes from March 2nd-4th.
The following week, March 9th-11th, the club will be
displaying at the 21st annual Motorsports Expo, once
again held in Cargill Hall @ the NYS Fairgrounds. Show
car director Mike Newell has some good ideas for our
displays which will include sportsman modified, late
model, asphalt modified, flathead modified and current
competition cars all represented. We're also planning
on sharing space again with photographer John Grady
as well as working on our third annual legends
autograph session. Our members have been prepping
their cars for this event, Dave Conde relates that
member John Clark has been feverishly restoring the
#10, a '56 ford latemodel raced at Midstate; 'The frame
has been fixed, both front and rear and a new cross
member. Frame has been painted(black).Body has
been remounted with floor pan repairs made with
original parts so it appears as factory. Interior has been
painted(white), cowl is painted gulf blue. Fresh engine
installed (wolverine cam) and will be fired for 1st time
Tuesday. Al Turner has paid 2 visits and is very happy.
He will be driving it at the fair parade and looks forward
to HOF party. Keep tuned for future updates.'
These winter shows are considered prestigious not only
due to the amount of people who attend them, but also
due to the fact that it's a way to give back to those who
support us; the racing community and promoters, who
without we would have no schedule whatsoever. There
by golly, try to say that three times fast. Members John
Clark, Mel Ogden, Alan Weaver, Jim Hilimire and Mike
Newell are all prepping their restored racers for these
events. We'd like to thank Reed Miller and Al Wilcox of
Penn-Can, Andy Harpell of 5MP, Richard Sweet of
Utica-Rome, Mike Mallet of Afton, Dick Stark of
Thunder Mountain, as well as Joe Patrick, Robin Oltz,
Paul Szmal and Craig Henry for including us in their
events, we look forward to them all.
Our new rules have spurred some interest and it looks
like we'll have some additional cars on the track this
season. If you have an antique stock car that you'd like
to either show or race with us, please contact us and
we'll forward you a set of rules, or just see us at the
shows. Member Alan Tatich and I are working up the
restrictor plates for the revised rules which, as
promised, will be a work in progress. A true 'cut and
try', after all we want to make this a workable and
competitive solution for all. And cheap. This is a great
hobby but it's still a hobby. As such it has to be
affordable in order to remain fun, that's a basic
requirement for our club. From the reports I've had so
far, all members have taken this to heart and our
inspection day should be a breeze, which is what we
want. Personally, I'd like to thank all of our members,
who support us for nothing but to put a smile on a fans
face. That's our pay and it's not too shabby. In one of
my recent interviews with Charles Akulis he related
that "racing was really about people, and I met a lot of
great people in my time racing." Those words rang true
for me too, I want to thank all of our members and
supporters for helping us keep our dream alive and we
look forward to our 2007 season.
Lastly, an update forward by both Dave Conde and
Ford Easton on Bill Wimble from his wife Nancy.
Hi to all across North America, We had a rough go here
in Florida north of us and I really feel for all those
people that were in the path of the tornado(s). Winds
must have been over 200mph in center of it. I am sure
you all saw it on TV during the day.
Bill and his wife Nancy came to the CLR South
luncheon Wed. at Plant City FL. Bill looked great and
had a super day talking with everyone. Being with 50s
and 60s race folks was really neat he told me. The 42
that attended gave Bill a standing ovation at the start of
our program. Guest speaker gave a very interesting
presentation on his racing background and things he
did in his racing career that everyone enjoyed hearing
about. Marg and I enjoy doing these for the drivers and
others involved with racing as it is my way of saying
thanks for all the excitement and thrills they gave me
in my teen years in WNY.
Ford
Bill and I went to see the Radiation Oncologist
today(Thur.). We were both concerned about the
results of the CT (CAT) scan. Dr. Kahn is very
satisfied with the results at this time. He has ordered a
PT (PET) scan for March 1. Bill will see the ENT doctor
a few days after that for the results. We discussed all of
our concerns with him. He spent all the time with us
that we wanted and was very truthful. The fact that Bill
still has some enlargement on the tumor side of his
tongue could be accounted for in different ways. He
explained that the radiation stops the cancer cells from
reproducing and that they are still there but can't
reproduce. There may still be swelling there
also. As far as the lymph nodes are concerned, he
explained that if the nodes were very large, he would
be concerned. The size that they are now is normal.
The saliva problem can be big problem. Our own saliva
helps ward off tooth decay. If you don't have enough,
teeth will rot and eventually so will the jaw. Bill may
have to take the saliva pills forever - time will tell. And,
he may have to do the fluoride treatments forever too.
As far as the feeding tube is concerned, after one
month of not using it, it can come out - YEAH. Bill
hasn't used it for about a week now. And, he is eating a
little and tasting a little too. He can taste some
things for one or two bites but after that it "tastes like
sawdust" again. The doctor was surprised that he could
taste anything yet. He ate a very small piece of steak
tonight, vegetables and a little soup.
We flew to Connecticut over the weekend for the NEAR
(racing) banquet. He did very well - didn't get tired and
was able to eat enough to get by. We bought Boost
when we got there and took the Resurgex with us.
Yesterday , we went to another racing event in Plant
City. He went to lunch today with a friend (had a
milkshake!). So you can see that things are slowly
getting back to normal.
Guess that's about it. I will keep you updated if
anything develops.
Thanks again for all the prayers, cards, emails, calls etc.
Nancy and Bill
That's all for now, see you at the shows.
