Brookfield Wheel Days
2008.
Quack Quack. Perfect
weather this weekend past, if
you're a duck that is. During
the week club members Larry
and Howdie Witter, Richard
Ackerman, John Mason and
you're truly prepped our race
cars for a go with the MVSCC
at Thunder Mountain
Speedway. I even annointed
the newly minted Campville
Racing Association Park
(heretoforth known as CRAP
Speedway - thanks buoys!)
with a buzz by the B29. I'll say
this, it's gets around there
faster than my lawn mower, or
the Teardrop. Satisfied, I
loaded the bomber and
watched the weather channel,
not good. 2:00 Pm on Friday
and Larry calls with the news,
rained out. Oh well, we still
got Saturday if it clears up....
9:00 Am Saturday and Jim
Hilimire calls, the races have
been cancelled and
re-scheduled for the following
Saturday, more info to come if
they'll have time for us. Oh
well, at least the car is ready
and Red Shredder never
sounded better, Dad is pleased
with how Old Faithfull is
running as well, aat least they
got a little exercise, and are
ready to go if something turns
up.
Wheel Days at Brookfield is
on rain or shine so Sunday
Am it's off to New Berlin to
meet up with Dad and my
brother Tom. As soon as I get
out of my car I can hear Tom
coming up the hill, so can
everyone else, I'll assume all
the way to Morris. Man is that
truck snotty sounding.. Dad
has the S33 loaded but has to
fire up Old Faithfull for me
just the same, he's right, it
does sound great, always been
a good engine and a wonder
it's still together after the way I
abused it..80lbs oil
pressure...maybe I want it
back??? The rain has subsided
for a bit and the ride to
Brookfield is enjoyable and
scenic, the leaves have turned
and the bright colors explode
as nature makes it's last gasp
for the year. So many times
have we made this trip to the
races with the club for our Fall
Championships, I miss those
races although I'm not so sure
I miss the track and it's
lighting - which made things
pretty darned challenging s I
recall..
Pull into the Fairgrounds and
Mike Newell already has the
#197 unloaded and on line.
Bob Gibbs and Donny Newell
come by as we unload to offer
a hand. John Mason has Mel
Ogden's #65 Brooks - Bar-B-Q
Spl. on hand and is massaging
the throttle encouraging it to
fire. Richard and Sharon Parry
are on hand and it's like we all
take up our conversations
where we left off last time we
talked. A tight knit group, and
the cars draw knowledgable
fans immediately when they
hear a flathead fire up..
There are plenty of nice cars
here today, a '56 Ford Pickup
with big block chevy power,
looked fast. Several Mustangs
of which the winner, in my
mind, was the 1970 Fastback
with a 429 Super Cobra Jet
stuffed into the engine
compartment. Teh owner built
a complete frame under the
car, tubbed it, added a 6 point
cage and then moved the
engine back 2" after shaving
the shock towers to make
room, 550+HP - YEOW! Sweet
car.
It didn't take long and the
rain came so we all hung out
under the trees and told war
stories. And jokes. Donny
Newell has wonderful memory
and can run one off after
another. Former member Mike
Chase joined us and we went
relived several battles here as
well as at Midstate, amongst
other tracks. It was fun,
relaxing, and full of smiles
despite the weather. Grab a
bite, look over the flea market,
pickings are slim and then
back to the cars. Getting
pretty sloppy so we loaded and
headed home, any day you
can put the car on the trailer
in one piece is a good day.
And that was pretty much it
for this season, at least as I
first thought. This past week I
made a deal with my neighbor
Jim Jackson to display our
cars for a showat his Pumpkin
Farm in Campvlle. Conviently,
it's right across the road from
my place..so we'll hold our Fall
Meeting, bring our grills and
burn some burgers, then put
our cars on display for the
Pumkin Farm patrons. Maybe
even make a few slow laps
around CRAP Speedway,
maybe some kiddie rides as
well, should be fun. This will
take place on Oct. 18th, and
yeah, I'll take a shovel to the
place prior....see you there.
The Stands at Brookfield from the Skaeneatles Turnpike.
Bob Gibbs and Donny Newell try to talk Dad into a ride..
If this car could only talk..
The Brooks Bar-B-Q Spl. always looks great..
Split personality #197..
This 1970 Mustang looks fast sitting still..
429 Super Cobra Jet, super rare..
The BS session, the best part of the day..
The S33 looks good from all angles..
Sweet '56 Ford pickup.
Sharp 1966 notchback.
One for the chevy guys, a 396 powers the '56.
Nice 1968 Mustang.
A working man's truck, REO Speedwagon.
The Teardrop on CRAP Speedway...yeah, I've mowed it since..
~See You Oct. 18~
