5 MILE POINT SPEEDWAY KIRKWOOD, NY
|
These photographs have been submitted by Mike Newell of Morris, NY. The
Newell's have been in the racing game since dirt was invented, Mike's
father Bill has been building power steering units for local racers for
decades and uncle Donny raced @ Midstate and the Southern Tier tracks
through the 60's and 70's. These photo's are just great, take a look.
Thanks Mike. More to
come..

Here's some more from Mike.
Hi Jeff,
Sounds like you had a fun but wet time on Satuday. Looked over the updates on Mike
Newell's 5 Mile photos and the orange #108 is Jerry Townley and the guy driving my
dad's old #2 is Jack Kerschner who used to run Moderns at Glen Aubrey and when the
new houses went in off 17c up the hill where the used car lot just past Crestview
Heights it cut into Valley View Drive where Jack lived on the Endicott end. It
displaced Jack's house and junk yard. He was a wheeler dealer but he had more
Hudsons per acre than anybody in the area. He was at Glen Aubrey when they started
the Moderns in 1960 and always ran a Hudson with a #2 on it and that's how we wound
up with the number on the car in the picture. The first time I ever went to Dundee it
was with him back in 1963. He built a beautiful 1955 Turquoise and White Ford 292
six to run at Shangri-La in 1965 because the Hudson's weren't legal 300 cu. in. limit)
and by then Glen Aubrey had went overhead and he was left without a place to race
because just about everybody had coupes with sixes in the Shangri-La and he just
could never make that Ford work there. He ran a couple shows in 1966 before calling it
quits because that's when they were first starting the housing project. I lost track of
him over the years and often wondered whatever happened to all those Hudsons he had
in his back 40. That really rough picture of the U-2 that I sent you from Glen Aubrey is
him. Trying to find a beautiful color shot (I think Ron Messemer has one of them also)
of his last Glen Aubrey Hudson from 1963 which was a two tone Black and White 1953
with a circle 2 in reverese colors. He lost the point championship I think to Amos
Fancuilli on the last night of racing when the thing overheated badly while in the lead
in the feature. If I find that photo I'll send it along. Have a good one. See you soon.
Mike
